Progress in the Pulpit– A ONE day learning experience for pastors and Bible teachers who want to invest in making progress in their personal preaching / teaching ministry, as well as providing some team aspects for church staff and leadership. It is geared toward practical ministry with a recognition and emphasis on the leader’s spiritual journey. We will worship…laugh…learn…grow… pray…and probably cry as we lean into God’s mission of Biblical and Gospel proclamation.

Dr. Jim Shaddix

Jim Shaddix holds a B.S. - Jacksonville State University, M.Div. and D.Min. - Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and Ph.D. - New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He serves as Professor of Preaching at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC, occupying the W. A. Criswell Chair of Expository Preaching. He also serves as Director of the Center for Preaching and Pastoral Leadership, which exists to resource pastors in local churches. Jim has pastored churches in Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana and Colorado and Alabama. He is the author of The Passion Driven Sermon (Broadman & Holman, 2003), Decisional Preaching (Rainer, 2018), and co-author with Jerry Vines of Power in the Pulpit (Moody, 1999, 2017) and Progress in the Pulpit (Moody, 2017). Jim and his wife, Debra, focus much of their attention on discipling and mentoring young leaders and spouses. They have three grown children and an ever-expanding quiver of grandchildren.

Dr. Shaddix will lead two sessions: “Progress in the Pulpit” and “Preaching Toward Maturity”. “Progress in the Pulpit”will focus on our need to invest in our personal preaching/teaching ministries, with significant practical strategies to accomplish it. “Preaching Toward Maturity” will address the role of effective preaching/teaching in the strategic discipleship process of the church.

Dr. Don Whitt

Born in Jefferson City, TN on July 27, Don and his wife, Judy, have three sons and seven grandchildren. Judy lost her battle with cancer in 2015. Two of his sons serve as pastors and one as an attorney. He holds a B.A. - Carson-Newman, M.Div. - Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and D.Min. - Luther Rice Seminary.Hehas pastored churches for over 30 years ranging in size from 20 members to over 3000 members with TV broadcast throughout the southeastern United States. Whitt served as the State Evangelism Director for the State Convention of Baptists in Ohio. Don is an avid quail hunter and has served as a professional hunting guide. God has particularly gifted him with the ability to call people to Christ and salvation.

In“Preaching Toward Decision”will help us to understand and implement effective strategies in our normal process of preaching/teaching preparation and delivery that call listeners to a decisive response to the Scriptures…and especially the Gospel. Each preacher/teacher is uniquely gifted, but God speaks through His Word in order that people might respond to Him personally.

Pastor Rich Nathan

Rich Nathan has served as senior pastor of Vineyard Columbus since 1987. Prior to becoming the church's first Senior Pastor, Rich taught business law at The Ohio State University for five years. A graduate of Case Western Reserve University, he also his Juris Doctorate with honors from The Ohio State University College of Law in 1980. Rich serves on the National Board for Vineyard USA and is currently the leader of the Large Church Task Force for the Vineyard. Rich co-authored “Both And” (IVP Books, 2013) with Insoo Kim as well as “Empowered Evangelicals” (Ampelon Revised 2009) with Ken Wilson. Rich is also the author of “Who is My Enemy? Welcoming People the Church Rejects” (Zondervan, 2002). Born and raised in New York City, Rich and his wife, Marlene, have been married for over 40 years. They have two children and six grandchildren.

“Preaching Toward Culture”will help us understand and invest significantly in how to preach/teach more effectively toward rapidly changing cultures. This session is not only geared toward helping us as communicators, but to assist in Gospel mobilization of our congregations in our communities. Rich’s heart for those in ministry will also be expressed as we end with a time of prayer and consecration before leaving to re-enter our own contextual mission field.

Back to Basics- Learn (or be refreshed in) the basics of sermon preparation and delivery. This is also good for those who prepare to teach in non-pulpit arenas on a regular basis. [Dr. Jim Shaddix]

Pressure Off: Preaching in Teams– Whether you have a staff team or a few volunteers capable (or potentially capable) of preaching / teaching on a regular basis, learn some of the strategic benefits and processes to make this approach work effectively. [Lifepoint Ohio Teaching Team]

Leading Through Preaching– Leading a congregation can be one of the most challenging tasks on the planet. Learn strategies for leveraging the preaching/teaching ministry to help your people respond to the Scriptures in your unique context. [Dr. Chad Keck – First Baptist Church Kettering]

Pressure Off: Planning Your Preaching– There is a unique pressure felt by the pastor who lives in the reality that Sunday comes every week. Having a plan for preaching not only relieves some of the pressure, but also helps with teaching more strategically. [Dr. Art Fulks – FBC Lancaster]

Preaching Toward the Next Generation– Those who invest much of their teaching/preaching ministry in the arena of students not only have audiences with a diverse perspective, but also face several unique challenges. Gain some practical help for your critical ministry. [TBA]
